Wall Removal | Calgary and Edmonton
Interior wall demolition sounds simple until the wall hides wiring, a vent stack or old asbestos mud. Enviro Surface Removers takes non-load-bearing walls down to the studs, or out completely, tests suspect materials first, and hauls every bit of debris away. We remove. We do not rebuild. That means one job, done by a crew that does it every week.

Every wall is different. Our interior wall demolition service covers most of the work below.
We scan the wall and find out what is inside it before we cut. If a wall carries a load, we stop and tell you. That job needs an engineer first.
This work is the controlled removal of a wall, one layer at a time, so the rest of the home stays safe and clean. Here is how our jobs run.
Every stage from first call to last walk-through is on our Our Process page.
Start here, because the answer changes the whole job. A load-bearing wall holds up the floor or roof above it. A partition wall only divides space.
Signs a wall may be load-bearing:
If you cannot tell, ask a structural engineer before anyone cuts. Taking out a load-bearing wall needs temporary support and a properly sized beam. We handle partition walls. When a wall carries load, we work after your engineer’s plan is in place.
It depends on the wall and the city. Taking out a plain partition wall is often treated differently than changing a wall that carries load, or one with plumbing, gas or electrical inside it. The City of Calgary has a permit checklist for interior partition removal, and it asks for a completed asbestos abatement form with the application. Check with the City of Calgary or the City of Edmonton before you start, and ask your contractor about the rebuild.
We can tell you what the demolition will touch, and we can supply our asbestos paperwork, which helps you answer the city’s questions.
More than people expect. Before we cut, we plan for:
When we open a wall and find a problem, we do not guess. We show you, we stop, and we leave the area open so your plumber, electrician or contractor can look before anything gets covered up.
It might, if the home was built before 1990. Alberta’s own guidance (ASB004) lists drywall mud (joint compound) and plaster among the materials that may release fibres. You cannot tell by looking.
Our crew is certified for asbestos testing and abatement, so we handle this in-house. We sample first. If a test is positive, we follow Alberta’s asbestos abatement manual (ASB001), haul the waste under the Dangerous Goods Transportation and Handling Act, and dispose of it at an approved landfill under Alberta’s asbestos waste guidelines.
To learn more about the material itself, read our asbestos floor tiles guide.
Drywall demolition makes fine dust that travels. It gets into vents, floors and furniture fast. Our work is virtually dust-free. We extract dust at the source with our equipment, and we poly off the rooms we are not working in. Some minor kick-out can happen, but you do not get a big dust cloud filling the house.
Demolition drywall removal also means handling the screws, tape and mud that come with it. We score the board along the studs, take it off in manageable pieces, bag it as we go and carry it out the planned route. Nothing sits piled in your living room.
Interior wall demolition cost depends on the job, not a flat rate. We do not publish prices because two walls that look the same can be very different once the drywall comes off. That is also why an online search for the cost to knock down an internal wall rarely helps. Here is what moves the quote.
| What changes | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Wall length and height | More wall means more material to take out and haul. |
| Wall layers | Plaster and lath takes longer than a single layer of drywall. |
| What is inside | Wiring, pipes and ducts add steps before the wall can come down. |
| Asbestos test results | A positive result means a controlled removal process and special disposal. |
| Access | Stairs, condo elevators and long carries add time. |
| Debris volume | More material means more hauling and landfill handling. |
Anyone can swing a hammer. Good interior wall demolition contractors prove four things before they start.
Enviro also holds BBB Accreditation and COR Certification. Ask any crew you hire for the same.
Moving an interior wall is two jobs. First the old wall comes out. Then someone builds the new one. We do the first job and leave you free to hire the trades you trust for the second.
For an open layout, we take out the full partition and cap whatever ran through it. If the wall you want gone carries load, your engineer’s plan comes first, and we work to that plan.

Condo boards often want notice, set work hours, and protected hallways and elevators. We carry the insurance paperwork they ask for, and we plan the route out so the lobby stays clean.

A DIY job takes a weekend of hard labour for most people. You rent a bin, protect your floors and haul the debris yourself. You also take on the risk. A cut wire, a nicked pipe or an untested wall costs more than you saved.
Hire a crew when:
Among interior wall demolition contractors in Alberta, we are the ones who only remove.
Tell us which wall, how long it is and the age of the home. We will talk through the job, test what needs testing, and take the whole wall out clean. Call the crew that does this every week.
