Dustless Floor Removal & Concrete Grinding
When an Edmonton renovation reaches the gut stage, the old surfaces have to come out before anything new goes in. Enviro Surface Removers handles that stage for homeowners and contractors across the city. We take out flooring of every type, subfloor, cabinets, countertops, plumbing and light fixtures, appliances, and interior non-load-bearing walls. We don’t touch load-bearing walls or structural work, and we don’t install flooring afterward. The dust is captured at the tool instead of settling through the house, and everything leaves in our trailer the same day.
Interior demolition is the removal of everything inside a space that isn’t holding the building up: flooring, subfloor, non-load-bearing walls, cabinets, fixtures, and appliances. It stops short of load-bearing walls, structural work, and full teardowns. Here’s what that covers on an Edmonton job:
What we don’t touch matters just as much: no load-bearing walls, no structural work, no full teardowns, and no excavation. If a project needs the structure itself changed, that’s a different trade — very likely one of the structural firms that fill the Edmonton demolition search — and we’ll say so rather than quote it. We also don’t install flooring. We remove it, which keeps our advice about what should come out free of any reason to lean one way.
In most cases, no. Interior, non-structural removal in Edmonton — taking out flooring, a subfloor, or a non-load-bearing wall — does not require a City of Edmonton demolition permit. That permit is for removing a building or structure, not for stripping the inside of one.
It helps to know where the line sits, because the permit process for a full demolition is a real one:

What sits under an Edmonton floor depends mostly on when the house was built. Older homes tend to hide layered coverings and, before the early 1990s, materials that can contain asbestos. Newer homes usually have a single layer over a clean subfloor.
Old Strathcona, Garneau, Bonnie Doon, Highlands, Riverdale
Often narrow strip hardwood buried under one or two later coverings. Sometimes worth uncovering and refinishing rather than tearing out. Because we don’t install flooring, we have no reason to push removal over refinishing when the wood underneath is sound.
Mill Woods, Beverly, Capilano, Ottewell
Usually original oak under carpet and underpad. Kitchens, bathrooms, and back entries from this era often sit on linoleum glued to particle-board subfloor.
Terwillegar, Summerside, The Hamptons, Rutherford
Tend to have glue-down sheet vinyl, engineered hardwood, and large-format tile set on a thick bed of thinset.
Laurel, Walker, Keswick, Glenridding
Usually a single layer over a clean subfloor, since there hasn’t been time for a second renovation to stack on top of the first.
It can. Flooring and adhesive installed before the early 1990s, including sheet vinyl backing, 9-by-9 and 12-by-12 inch vinyl tile, and the black cutback adhesive underneath, are presumed to contain asbestos under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Code until a test proves otherwise.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies asbestos as a Group 1 carcinogen, and Health Canada notes that material left in good condition carries little risk, while cutting, sanding, or prying it up releases fibres that don’t stay contained. Testing comes before removal, not after — we count the layers and test what needs testing before we quote a job, not partway through it.
Yes, floor removal makes dust, and in Alberta that dust is regulated, not just a nuisance. Thinset, grout, and concrete contain crystalline silica, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies as a Group 1 carcinogen. Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Code sets exposure limits and requires the work to control it.
For the full picture on how we handle silica during removal, see our Dustless Tile Removal & Thinset page.
We lift nailed, glued, and engineered hardwood across Edmonton homes, including the narrow strip flooring common in the older mature core. Every job starts by checking whether the wood underneath is worth saving.
Hardwood Floor Removal
Carpet, underpad, staples, and tack strip come out room by room or through a whole house. We flag whatever turns up underneath, since older carpet can hide water damage or mould that needs attention first.
Carpet Removal
Vinyl composition tile and its adhesive come out by a crew certified for asbestos testing and abatement, handled in-house from sampling through removal when it's needed.
VCT Tile & Adhesive Removal
Lifting the tile is only half the job. The thinset left behind gets ground to a flat, clean surface using source-capture dust control, not a sealed room and a shop vac.

Linoleum glued to particle-board subfloor, common in Edmonton homes from the post-war era, comes out down to a clean base, layer by layer.
Linoleum & Subfloor Removal
High spots, old coatings, and adhesive residue get ground off a concrete slab and profiled to spec for whatever goes down next.
Concrete Grinding & ShotblastingBecause the firms that rank for demolition in Edmonton mostly do structural teardowns and heavy hauling, not the careful interior removal a renovation needs. A removal specialist takes out only what has to go and leaves a clean subfloor for the next trade.
The companies at the top of the Edmonton demolition search take down bridges, buildings, and whole houses, or they haul junk by the truckload. Neither is built for the interior, renovation-stage work a homeowner or contractor needs before new flooring goes in. We don’t sell flooring, and we don’t do structural teardown. That narrow focus is the point — there’s no installation job riding on the removal, no heavy-equipment minimum, and no reason to take out more than the job needs.
That shows up in how our crew works. Jobs start with a hazard assessment and a walk-through before anything comes up. We’ve advised customers to keep flooring that was worth keeping, and corrected assumptions that would have cost money. Once the base is exposed and measured, the flooring installer coming next inherits a clean subfloor, not a guess.

For a full structural demolition, the City issues the permit only after ATCO confirms the gas line is cut back, which can take around 20 business days. Interior, non-structural removal usually needs no permit at all, so there’s no wait.
Taking down a building or structure without a permit can bring stop-work orders and fines from the City of Edmonton. Interior, non-structural removal generally doesn’t need one, but if a job crosses into structural work, we tell you before it starts.
We disconnect and remove standard plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, and appliances ourselves. The one exception is a fixture with no shut-off valve, where the main gets shut off for that part of the job.
Yes. Everything leaves in our trailer the same day. There’s no bin to rent and no second call to make.

No. We remove flooring, we don’t install it. We leave the subfloor measured and ready for your installer.
