When a Calgary renovation reaches the gut stage, someone has to take the old flooring, the subfloor, the cabinets, and sometimes a wall out before anything new goes in. Enviro Surface Removers handles that stage for homeowners and contractors across the city. We remove flooring of every type, cabinets, countertops, plumbing and light fixtures, appliances, and interior non-load-bearing walls. We don’t touch load-bearing walls or structural work, and we don’t install flooring afterward. Dust is captured at the tool instead of settling through the house, and everything leaves in our trailer the same day.
Interior demolition means taking out everything inside a space that isn’t holding the building up.
What we don’t touch matters just as much: no load-bearing walls, no structural work, no full teardowns or excavation. If a project needs the structure itself changed, that’s a different trade, and we’ll say so rather than quote it.
One more line worth stating plainly: we don’t install flooring. We remove it. That keeps our advice about what should come out, and what’s worth keeping, free of any reason to lean one way over the other.

Inglewood, Bridgeland, Kensington, Ramsay, Mission
Often narrow strip hardwood buried under one or two later coverings. Sometimes worth uncovering and refinishing rather than tearing out completely. Because we don’t install flooring ourselves, we have no reason to recommend removal over refinishing when the wood underneath is sound.
Acadia, Fairview, Haysboro, Thorncliffe, Forest Lawn
Usually original oak under a layer of carpet and underpad. Kitchens, bathrooms, and back entries from this era often sit on linoleum glued to K3 particle board, a three-layer subfloor product common in Alberta homes of this age. This is also the era where asbestos shows up most — see below.
Tuscany, Citadel, McKenzie Towne, Cranston
Tend to have glued-down sheet vinyl, engineered hardwood, and large-format tile set on a thick bed of thinset.
Seton, Mahogany, Livingston, Carrington
Usually carries a single layer over a clean subfloor, since there hasn’t been time yet for a second renovation to stack on top of the first.
Flooring and adhesive installed before the early 1990s can contain asbestos, particularly sheet vinyl backing, 9-by-9 and 12-by-12 inch vinyl floor tile, and the black cutback adhesive underneath both. Under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Code, building material of that age is presumed to contain asbestos until testing proves otherwise.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies asbestos as a Group 1 carcinogen, and Health Canada notes that material in good condition and left undisturbed carries little risk, while cutting, sanding, or prying it up releases fibres that don’t stay contained.
We count the layers and test what needs testing before we quote a job, not partway through it. A floor with three coverings stacked on top of each other means a different amount of labour, a different volume of debris, and a different finished height at every doorway than a floor with one.
Yes, and in Alberta the dust from this work is regulated, not just an inconvenience. Thinset, grout, and concrete all contain crystalline silica, and cutting or grinding them releases fine particles into the air. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies crystalline silica as a Group 1 carcinogen, and Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Code sets exposure limits and requires employers to control it on any job that generates it.

We disconnect and remove standard plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, and appliances ourselves. The one exception is a fixture with no shut-off valve installed, in which case the main gets shut off for that part of the job.
