Dustless Floor Removal & Concrete Grinding
In most Alberta homes, lino isn’t one layer. It’s sheet flooring glued to K3 particle board, and that board is stapled and glued to the plywood underneath. All three have to come out together. We remove the lino, the K3, and every staple left in the plywood, then haul it away and leave a subfloor your installer can work on.
Quick answer: K3 is 3/8-inch particle board underlayment, stapled and glued over the plywood subfloor to create a smooth, uniform surface for sheet flooring to bond to.
It was standard practice in Western Canadian homes for decades. That’s why it turns up in Calgary and Edmonton kitchens and bathrooms constantly, and why it barely appears in national flooring guides written somewhere else. The staples go in every four to five inches, across the whole floor.
Particle board is compressed wood fibre held together with resin. It swells when it gets wet, crumbles under point loads, and isn’t an acceptable base for tile, hardwood, or most floating floors. Flooring installers won’t warranty over it. So when the lino goes, the K3 goes with it.
Quick answer: Cut it into sections, lift it off the subfloor, then deal with whatever stayed behind. What “stayed behind” means depends entirely on how your floor was built.
There are two situations, and knowing which one you have changes everything.
Newer sheet goods are often glued only around the edges of the room. Cut in about ten inches from the wall and the middle section lifts away loose. The easy case — and the one most online guides describe.
Older floors in this province are glued across the entire surface to particle board that’s stapled down every few inches. Nothing lifts free. Nothing peels.
A widely-shared piece of advice tells you to cut ten inches in from the wall because linoleum is “only glued at the perimeter.” On a perimeter-bonded floor, that works. On lino bonded to K3, you cut a rectangle into your floor and nothing moves.
It’s doable as a DIY project. It’s also, honestly, the hardest floor removal job in an Alberta house.
Quick answer: Ask your flooring installer before you spend a weekend scraping.
Some installations go over sound residue. Some need bare substrate. Others call for a fresh layer of underlayment on top, which would cover the old adhesive anyway. If new underlayment is going down, scraping the floor to bare plywood first can be wasted effort.
Where the glue does have to come off, the substrate decides the method:
Adhesive and felt backing tear and bond into the wood grain. Scraping hard enough to get it all can gouge the plies. Old lino often leaves a paper or felt backing stuck down after the top layer pulls away — its own separate removal step, and the part most guides skip entirely.

Quick answer: On concrete, yes. On a wood subfloor, be careful.
Plywood is thin layers of wood bonded together. Solvents can work into the seams and separate those layers, which turns an adhesive problem into a subfloor replacement. Softening agents also leave residue behind, and that residue can interfere with the adhesive for your new floor bonding properly.
Heat works better than chemicals on wood in most cases — it softens the glue without soaking into the substrate. On a concrete slab the concern doesn’t apply the same way, though mechanical removal is still faster and leaves a cleaner surface for whatever goes down next.
Quick answer: True linoleum doesn’t contain asbestos.
Linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, and jute backing — that’s what linoleum actually is, and it’s what Marmoleum still is today. It does not contain asbestos.
What did contain asbestos: the felt backing on the underside, and the black cutback adhesive used to stick it down. People call both products “lino” — which is exactly why the distinction matters before anyone starts cutting.

The staples are the real labour — what remains when particle board breaks away from plywood, and there is no fast way through them.
The plywood underneath is the other thing nobody can assess until the K3 is off. It’s been covered since the house was built. Water damage around dishwashers and bathroom fixtures, soft patches, and old repairs all surface at that point. If we find something, we show you before anything new goes over it.
Close enough doesn’t work with modern flooring. Floating floors and LVP have flatness tolerances, and leftover staples or adhesive ridges telegraph straight through as visible bumps once furniture is back in the room.
K3 is the reason this page is local. It went into Calgary homes built through the sixties, seventies, and eighties.

Generally no. Particle board isn’t an approved substrate for tile, and most installers won’t warranty a floor laid over it. It comes out.
Yes, all of them. They’re what’s left in the plywood when K3 breaks away, and they telegraph through a new floor if they stay.
It often does, because the underlayment went down before the cabinets did. We cut it cleanly at the cabinet line and leave a proper edge, so your installer can handle the height transition without a ragged joint to work around.
Lift a floor vent cover and look at the cut edge. You’ll see the layers stacked, and you can measure the thickness of each one.
It depends on square footage, how many layers are stacked, and what shape the plywood underneath is in. We give you a timeline after seeing the floor.
Yes. On a slab the adhesive stays behind and gets ground off rather than scraped, which is a different process with a different finish.
