Bathroom Demolition Contractors in Alberta: Tubs, Tile and Vanities Out

Bathroom demolition contractors earn their pay on the hard parts: a cast iron tub, a tile bed set in mortar, or a floor glued down in 1978. Enviro Surface Removers takes the room down to the studs and subfloor, tests suspect materials first, and hauls every bit of debris away. We remove. We do not install. That means one job, done by a crew that does it every week.

What We Take Out

Every bathroom is different. Our bathroom demolition services cover most of the items below.

We shut off the water to each fixture before we touch it. If a fixture has no shut-off valve, the main has to be shut off first. We tell you that before the day starts, so nobody gets surprised.

How Does Bathroom Demolition Work?

This work is the controlled removal of fixtures, tile, walls and flooring so the room is ready for a new build. A professional crew protects the home, tests suspect materials, strips the room in order, and removes all debris. Here is how our jobs run.

Every stage from first call to last walk-through is on our Our Process page.

How Long Does a Bathroom Tear-Out Take?

A small bathroom is a short job. Size, tub type, tile bed thickness and test results decide the final timeline. A cast iron tub or a thick mortar bed adds time. A positive asbestos test adds a controlled removal step. We give you a timeline when we see the space, and we stick to it.

Bathroom Demolition Cost: What Changes the Number

The cost depends on the job, not a flat rate. We do not publish prices because two bathrooms that look the same can be very different once the tile comes off. Here is what moves the quote.

What changesWhy it matters
Room sizeMore wall and floor area means more material to take out and haul.
Tub typeA cast iron tub is heavy and often must be broken up. Acrylic lifts out whole.
Tile and bedTile set in a thick mortar bed takes longer than tile on backer board.
Asbestos test resultsA positive result means a controlled removal process and special disposal.
AccessStairs, condo elevators and long carries add time.
Debris volumeMore material means more hauling and landfill handling.

Why a Bathroom Demolition Cost Calculator Falls Short

An online cost calculator cannot see behind your tile. It does not know if the tub is cast iron or if the floor tests positive. Cost per square foot has the same problem, because a small room with a mortar bed and a steel tub can take longer than a large room with simple finishes. Call us with your room size and the age of the home. We will talk through the scope and give you a clear quote.

What to Look For in Bathroom Demolition Contractors

Anyone can swing a hammer. Good bathroom demolition contractors prove four things before they start.

Enviro also holds BBB Accreditation and COR Certification. Ask any crew you hire for the same.

Does My Bathroom Have Asbestos?

It might, if the home was built before 1990. Alberta’s own guidance (ASB004) names vinyl asbestos floor tile, vinyl sheet flooring, drywall mud (joint compound) and plaster as materials that may release fibres. Adhesive under old flooring can be a concern too. You cannot tell by looking.

Alberta guidance says materials that could release asbestos fibres must be removed by a trained and competent worker before demolition. So suspect materials get tested first.

Our crew is certified for asbestos testing and abatement, so we handle this in-house. We sample first. If a test is positive, we follow Alberta’s asbestos abatement manual (ASB001), haul the waste under the Dangerous Goods Transportation and Handling Act, and dispose of it under Alberta’s asbestos waste disposal guidelines at an approved landfill.

To learn more about the material itself, read our asbestos floor tiles guide.

How to Demo a Bathroom Shower

Here is the short version for a DIY job.

How to demo a bathroom shower: turn off the water, remove the fixtures and trim, cut the caulk, then take off the tile, backer board and pan in sections.

How to demo a bathroom tub: disconnect the drain and overflow, cut the caulk, remove a row of tile above the flange, pull every fastener, then slide the tub out on skids.

Two things trip up most homeowners. A cast iron tub can weigh more than a person can lift safely, and steel or porcelain is slippery. Cutting or breaking a tub without a plan also cracks the subfloor. Older tile is often set in mortar over wire lath, which is hard, heavy and sharp when it breaks. Our crew removes both without damaging the subfloor, so the base stays flat for your next trade.

What Hides Behind Bathroom Walls?

Water finds a way in. Once the tile is off, we often see soft subfloor, stained framing or old mould. We do not guess. We show you what we find, and we leave the area open so your plumber or contractor can inspect it before anything gets covered up.

Our work is virtually dust-free. We extract dust at the source with our equipment, and we poly off rooms we are not working in. Some minor kick-out can happen, but you do not get a big dust cloud filling the house.

Bathroom Demolition Near Me: Where We Work

Looking for bathroom demolition near me? We work in Calgary and Edmonton, and the communities around them.

In Calgary, that means condos in the Beltline, heritage homes in Inglewood and Kensington, and family homes along Deerfoot Trail. In Edmonton, we work from Oliver and Garneau out to Whyte Avenue, and across the older homes near the University of Alberta.

Condo boards often want notice, set work hours, and protected hallways and elevators. We carry the insurance paperwork they ask for, and we plan the route out so the lobby stays clean.

DIY or Hire a Crew?

A DIY job takes a weekend of hard labour for most people. You rent a bin, protect your floors and haul the debris yourself. You also take on the risk. A cut water line, an untested floor or a dropped tub costs more than you saved.

Hire bathroom demolition contractors when:

Do I Need a Permit to Demo a Bathroom?

It depends on the work and the city. Removing fixtures and finishes is often treated differently than changing plumbing, electrical or walls. Check with the City of Calgary or the City of Edmonton before you start, and ask your plumber or contractor about permits for the rebuild. We can tell you what the demolition will touch, which helps you answer the city’s questions.

Why Choose Enviro

Questions We Hear Often

Yes. Tell us before the day starts which items you want to keep, such as a working toilet, vanity or light fixture. We take them out with care and set them aside.
Then the main water line has to be shut off first. We confirm this before the day starts so your household knows when water will be off.
No. We do removal only. That keeps our crew fast and focused, and it leaves you free to hire the trades you trust for the rebuild.
Our work is virtually dust-free. We extract dust at the source and poly off the rooms we are not working in. Expect some minor kick-out, but not a big cloud of dust.
Often yes. Once the room is bare, your plumber sees the real condition of the pipes and subfloor, and the quote for the rebuild gets more accurate.
We haul it all away. Anything that tests positive for asbestos goes to an approved landfill under Alberta’s rules.
