Epoxy Floor Removal and Coating Removal in Alberta: Old Coatings Taken Off Down to Bare Concrete

We take epoxy, urethane, paint and sealer off concrete floors, and we leave a clean slab behind. We remove coatings only. We do not install them, so there is no sales pitch for a new one.

What Coatings Do We Remove From Concrete Floors?

We remove epoxy floor coatings, urethane topcoats, floor paint and sealers from concrete. The coating comes off, and the slab is left bare, clean and ready for what comes next.

Most customers call because a coating is peeling, stained or worn out. Others are changing how the space is used, or putting down a new floor and need the old coating gone first.

This page covers coating removal. If you only need a slab prepared for a new coating, see our concrete grinding page.

Quick Facts About Our Epoxy Coating Removal

Who Needs a Floor Coating Taken Off?

Most of our coating jobs fall into one of these groups.

If you are a contractor, see how we work with trades on our For General Contractors page.

Why Do Epoxy Floors Have to Come Off?

A good coating can last for years. It still has to come off in a few cases.

A new coating over a failed one fails too. The old layer has to come off first, or the new one lets go of it.

How Is Epoxy Flooring Removed?

Epoxy bonds hard to concrete, so it does not scrape off like paint. The right method depends on how thick the coating is, how well it is stuck, and what is under it.

We choose the method on site after looking at the floor. Thin coatings and sealers come off differently from thick, multi-layer systems.

How Does Our Coating Removal Process Work? Five Steps

The job follows the same five steps on most floors.

1. Call and walk-through

We talk through what you have, what the space is used for and what goes down next. We look at the floor in person before we agree on the work.

2. Protect the space

Rooms and areas that are not part of the job are closed off with poly.

3. Remove the coating

The crew takes the coating off with equipment chosen for that floor. Dust shrouds are connected to HEPA vacuums the whole time.

4. Check the slab

We look over the bare concrete for cracks, spalls and leftover patches, and show you anything we find.

5. Haul away and clean

We carry the debris out, vacuum with HEPA filtration and leave the slab clean.

Dust Control During Coating Removal

Cutting a coating off concrete makes fine dust. The dust from the concrete itself can hurt your lungs if it is breathed in over time. We keep it out of the air.

Our equipment has dust shrouds connected to HEPA vacuums, so the dust is pulled out at the source. The work is virtually dust-free. A little dust still escapes, but there is no big cloud filling the room.

Where people are working or living nearby, we poly off the rooms that are not part of the job.

What Will the Concrete Look Like When We Finish?

You get a bare, clean concrete slab. The surface may show the marks of the tooling, along with old cracks, patches and stains that were under the coating.

Whether the slab needs more work depends on what goes on next. A new coating, tile, polished concrete and floating flooring all want different surfaces. Your installer can tell you what they need. If the slab needs a specific profile, our concrete grinding service handles that.

If the floor is uneven, see our uneven floor repair page.

What Else Might Be Under the Coating?

Some coatings were laid over older flooring or adhesive. If we find tile, sheet flooring or black glue under a coating, we stop and treat it as a possible asbestos material.

An independent third-party consultant tests it. We do not test our own work. If a test is positive, our crew handles the abatement before we carry on. Learn more on our asbestos removal and abatement page, or our asbestos floor tiles page.

“I highly recommend Enviro Surface Removers, they removed 600 sqft of tile in our kitchen, pantry, ball hall and laundry. They arrived on time to the minute, worked very hard, did a fantastic job and left no mess. I'm astounded by what a great job they did. I highly recommend them!”

Laine Colman · Google review

★★★★★

“100% recommend this company. They managed to squeeze us in on a tight schedule and did a fantastic job. They started off with a hazard assessment and crew walk through which was awesome to see. They used plastic to seal off the rest of the house, plugged off the vents and left the subfloor looking like new. Everything was left clean and ready for flooring. Subfloor looked so good, other contractors didn't even know that there was tile before!”

Epoxy Coating Removal Questions, Answered

Most coatings come off by diamond grinding. Grinders with diamond tooling cut the coating off the concrete in layers, with dust shrouds connected to HEPA vacuums. Thick or multi-layer systems may need heavier tooling or a second pass.
The slab will show tooling marks, and any cracks or patches under the coating will show. We look the floor over when the coating is off and show you what we find. The concrete itself stays sound.
The price depends on the size of the floor, how thick the coating is, how well it is stuck, and how easy it is to reach. We give a price after we see the floor. Call us and we will go through it.
