What sits under an Edmonton floor depends mostly on when the house was built. Older homes tend to hide layered coverings and, before the early 1990s, materials that can contain asbestos. Newer homes usually have a single layer over a clean subfloor.

It can. Flooring and adhesive installed before the early 1990s, including sheet vinyl backing, 9-by-9 and 12-by-12 inch vinyl tile, and the black cutback adhesive underneath, are presumed to contain asbestos under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Code until a test proves otherwise.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies asbestos as a Group 1 carcinogen, and Health Canada notes that material left in good condition carries little risk, while cutting, sanding, or prying it up releases fibres that don’t stay contained. Testing comes before removal, not after — we count the layers and test what needs testing before we quote a job, not partway through it.
Yes, floor removal makes dust, and in Alberta that dust is regulated, not just a nuisance. Thinset, grout, and concrete contain crystalline silica, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies as a Group 1 carcinogen. Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Code sets exposure limits and requires the work to control it.

For a full structural demolition, the City issues the permit only after ATCO confirms the gas line is cut back, which can take around 20 business days. Interior, non-structural removal usually needs no permit at all, so there’s no wait.
Taking down a building or structure without a permit can bring stop-work orders and fines from the City of Edmonton. Interior, non-structural removal generally doesn’t need one, but if a job crosses into structural work, we tell you before it starts.
We disconnect and remove standard plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, and appliances ourselves. The one exception is a fixture with no shut-off valve, where the main gets shut off for that part of the job.
