Concrete grinding removes the top layer of a slab using diamond tooling that spins under a weighted machine. Each pass takes off material in a controlled amount. What’s left is bare, sound concrete with a texture the next product can grip.
The reason to do it comes down to how coatings hold. Epoxy, urethane, and polished systems don’t stick to a slab chemically — they lock into the texture of the surface. A smooth, power-troweled floor gives them almost nothing to hold. The coating sits on top instead of bonding in, and it lets go later.
Both methods prepare concrete. They work differently, and they leave different surfaces behind. Shot blasting uses an enclosed machine that throws small steel pellets at the slab using centrifugal force — it strips, cleans, and profiles in a single pass. Diamond grinding removes material in layers instead of blasting it off, giving a flatter, smoother result with finer control over how much comes off.

The coating decides the profile — not the contractor, and not the budget. The International Concrete Repair Institute publishes the Concrete Surface Profile scale, written as CSP, in Technical Guideline No. 310.2R-2013. It runs from CSP 1, which is nearly smooth, up through CSP 10, which is deeply broken and open. Each number is a defined level of roughness with a physical reference chip that crews use to check the floor on site.
The number you need comes from the product going down. Thin sealers and penetrating treatments bond at the low end of the scale. Epoxy and high-build coatings sit in the middle. Thick overlays, urethane cements, and trowel-applied systems need the rough end.
Method sets what’s reachable. Diamond grinding produces the lighter profiles at the low end of the scale. Shot blasting covers a much wider band, including the aggressive profiles that grinding can’t reach. That’s the practical reason a contractor needs both.
Failed prep shows up later as peeling, blistering, edge curl, pinholes, hot tire pickup in garages, or full sheets letting go. These get blamed on the coating. Most of the time the coating was fine and the surface underneath it wasn’t.
Grinding concrete creates dust. That dust is not harmless. Concrete contains crystalline silica — grinding, cutting, and blasting break it into particles small enough to breathe deep into the lungs.
This isn’t a recommendation. It’s the standard the work is held to in this province. Dust control is the reason the job can happen at all in an occupied building — our equipment captures dust where it’s made instead of letting it settle and dealing with it afterward.

Grinding levels a floor by taking material off. It doesn’t add anything. That works well for high spots, trowel ridges, raised edges where a crack has lifted on one side, and uneven transitions between two sections of slab.
For most commercial and residential slabs heading into new flooring, high-spot removal is what’s actually needed. The floor doesn’t have to be perfect. It has to be flat enough for the product going on top.
Cost tracks what’s on the slab and what has to be achieved, not square footage alone.

We quote after seeing the floor. Guessing at a number before knowing what’s on the slab helps nobody.
Pulling up the old floor is the first half of the job. The slab underneath is rarely ready for anything yet. What gets left behind depends on what came up:
None of it is a surface a new floor can go onto. Grinding is the step that turns a stripped slab into a finished one — it’s also why removal and floor prep belong with the same crew. The crew that pulled the floor already knows what’s under it, what adhesive was used, and where the slab is sound.

The equipment travels. So does the standard. A slab in a Canmore shop gets prepped to the same profile spec as one in a Calgary warehouse, because the coating going on top doesn’t care where the building is.
Mechanical preparation is what gives the coating something to hold. Without a profile, epoxy sits on the surface rather than locking into it, and it lets go later. The manufacturer’s data sheet will state the profile their product needs.
It depends on square footage, what’s on the slab, and the target profile. An open floor with a single worn coating moves quickly. A cut-up space with multiple layers takes longer. We give a timeline after seeing the floor.
